The week before last I was asked to create a slightly modified copy of Tiepolo’s “Madonna and Child with a Goldfinch.” I was only too happy to comply. I find Tiepolo especially exciting to copy because of his brushwork. I tried to emulate the looseness of his stroke and the “broken” color that he used. I changed the expression of baby Jesus so that he was looking up as opposed to at the viewer. After finishing the painting, I glazed it to increase the richness of the dark colors.
